Welcome to Tigers

On behalf of the year 5 team, I would like to say that we are extremely excited about working with your child and that we are looking forward to supporting them in their journey throughout the school year. We are a committed team consisting of myself (Miss Johnson) and Mrs Webb. We are also extremely lucky to welcome back Miss Nolan who worked with your child last year. This year Miss Nolan will be working with us as an associate trainee teacher. We strive to ensure that your child is inspired and motivated through a love of learning and that they are motivated to achieve to their maximum ability. We hope your child enjoys being a year 5 Tiger as much as we love having them!

On our class page you will be able to see all the exciting learning that we have done and will be doing throughout the year.

The children have made a fantastic start to Year 5 - keep checking our page regularly to see all of the fun we have been getting up to.

Please find below a list of information which you will find helpful throughout the year.

PE

PE will be on Wednesday. We are extremely lucky as our Wednesday PE session is taught by a specialist coach.

Please ensure that your child has their full PE kit in school on the days specified above. Children have been asked to only bring their PE kit into school on the days they have PE and they are asked to take it home with them the same day.

School PE kit consists of blue shorts, pale blue or white T-shirt and black pumps or trainers.

During the Autumn and Winter months some PE lessons may be taught outside, so we ask that children bring warm jumpers and tracksuit bottoms to equip them for the colder weather.

If a child is unable to do P.E a note or message from the parent / carer must be provided, otherwise children will be expected to take part.

Please ensure that if your child wears earrings, that they are removed on PE days or that you provide your child with plasters so that they can be covered.

For health and safety reasons we are not permitted to take them out or put them back in for your child.

Swimming

Swimming will take place on Friday mornings.

Please ensure your child brings their swimming kit in on a Friday. We do not have any spare swim kits therefore if they do not have their swimming kit that day, they will not be able to participate in the session.

Swimming kits must consist of either a swimming costume or swim shorts (no two-piece swimming costumes permitted and no below the knee length swim shorts). They will also need a towel and a swimming cap. Swimming caps can be purchased in the school office. It is also recommended that your child brings goggles as these can benefit the progression your child makes.

As stated above, jewellery must be removed prior to the swimming lesson.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and asked to be returned no later than the following Wednesday. Homework tasks will focus on an area of the curriculum we have been learning that week for assessment purposes. Weekly spellings will also be sent home and our spelling test is every Thursday.  We are also encouraging children to access online learning content such as Bug Club, Times Table Rock Stars and IDL. Children have been given their username and passwords for these accounts.

Reading

For reading at home, we encourage children to use the online reading App Bug Club. This is an App that can be accessed on tablets, IPads or laptops and computers. To log in to Bug Club use the following link https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0 or search active learn on Google.

Bug Club is monitored by myself and does not require adult support. Children can read the books allocated to them and questions relating to the texts are provided for pupils to respond to.

This year in the Tigers Class we have set a ‘WILD about READING Challenge!”

For this half term the challenge is for your child to read at least once a week. If your child reads at least once a week they will move along our reading challenge wall. If they reach the target they will earn an award afternoon which will be held on the last day of the half term.

If your child reads more than once a week, however many times they read will equate to how many raffle tickets they get for the chance to be able to win the ‘Reader of the Term’ prize.

If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us!
