What We Are Learning: Summer 2

Maths

For our final half term, we will be covering. A big focus will be on different aspects of measurment, icluding: mass, volume and capacity and money. We will then move on to geometry, with a focus on position and direction.

English

During our English lessons this half term we will be writing out own fantasy stories, with the children’s own robot models as the central charatcer; writing recounts about making a robot model and learning a poem by heart for performance.

Our Phonics lessons will be based around Read Write Inc. During our English lessons, we will be creating an information booklet as well as learning traditional rhymes by heart.

Religious Education

Our unit this half term is ‘God and Creation’. We will be developing our perceptions and understandings of God, as well as reflecting on the awe, wonder, delight and mystery in relation to the natural world.

Our theme this half term will be, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. We will be learning all about animals in Science and will be using this knowledge to help us to create some great pieces of art in Art & Design.

We will have two P.E lessons each week. Our first P.E lesson will take place on a Monday afternoon and we will be focussing on tennis skills. Our second lesson of  the week will be taught by the Sport’s Coach on Thursday mornings and will be OAA.

Music

Our unit this half term will be ‘Explore Sound and Create a Story’ where we will be learning how music connects us to the environment.

 

Science

We will be learning how to spot and name a variety of common animals and group animals according to what they eat. We will know that a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

During our new unit of work, ‘My Friend the Robot’, we will learn about what robots are and how they are used in the world around us. We will explore coding games to learn about sequencing, algorithms, debugging and how to create simple programs. We will be working with the Beebots a lot during this unit.

Our Phonics lessons will be based around Read Write Inc. During our English lessons, we will be writing a recount linked to family celebrations; writing a narrative with a familiar setting; creating an information booklet as well as learning traditional rhymes by heart.

Religious Education

Our unit this half term is: Why is baptism special? We will be deepening of understanding of what it means to belong through exploring the celebration of baptism and the ways in which people of faith welcome babies.

Theme

Our theme this half term will be, ‘How does your garden grow?’. Within this theme, we will be learning about plants in Science, Seasons in Geography and will be making our own garden windmills in DT.

We will have two P.E lessons each week. Our first P.E lesson will take place on a Monday afternoon and we will be focussing on basketball. Our second lesson of the week will be taught by the Sport’s Coach on Thursday mornings and will be dance based.

 

Music

Our unit this half term will be ‘Having Fun with Improvisation’. We will be thinking about which songs we can sing to help us through the day.

 

Science

In Science this half term we will be learning to name and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

We will also be able to name some common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.

PSHE

In PSHE this half term we will be learning all about who keeps us safe. We will learn that people have different roles in the community to help keep everybody safe. We will also be learning what to do if we feel unsafe or worried for ourselves or others; and the importance of keeping on asking for support until we are heard.

Spanish

This half term in Spanish, we will be learning about the seasons.

Computing

During our new unit of work, ‘News Presenter’, children will become news reporters. The children will film short news reports based using green screen, to communicate their work with others.

What We Are Learning: Spring 2

Maths

We will be exploring numbers to 40 in a variety of ways. In year 1, we will start with counting to 40 in different ways and writing numbers to 40. As the sequence progresses, we will be comparing numbers and looking at number patterns. We will then be using our knowledge to complete word problems.

We will then be working on our multiplication knowledge. The children will learn the foundations of equal groupings, repeated addition, arrays and doubling. By the end of the chapter, we will be able to apply that knowledge to solve word problems.

English

Our Phonics lessons will be based around Read Write Inc. This half term, we will also be introducing additional English lessons. We will begin with exploring and writing our own Traditional Tale. We will then finish the half term exploring a range of non-fiction recounts and writing our own recount about a family event.

Religious Education

Our unit this half term is: Easter- Celebrating New Life and New Beginnings. We will be reflecting upon the miracles of nature and new life during springtime. We will become familiar with the Easter story and be able to re-tell it in a variety of ways, as well as developing an understanding of the resurrection.

Theme

Our theme this half term will be, ‘Beside the Seaside’. We will be using a range of artefacts to found out what seaside holidays used to be in the past.

We will have two P.E lessons each week. Our first P.E lesson will take place on a Monday afternoon. We will be continuing to develop our gymnastic skills. Our second lesson of the week will be taught by the Sport’s Coach on Thursday mornings and will be athletics based.

Music

Our unit this half term will be exploring how music helps us to understand our neighbours. We will celebrate a wide range of musical styles.

This half term we will be focusing on learning more about seasons. We will observe the changes in weather and our environment and look back at photographs from the beginning of the school year to now.

This half term we will be learning all about money. We will be understanding what money is, what we can do with it and how we can choose to use it. We will understand that we can save money and the difference between wants and needs.

This half term in Spanish, we will be learning about the months of the year in Spanish.

 

Computing

During our new unit of work, ‘Modern Tales’, we will continue to develop our understanding of online safety. We will look at opening; saving and creating digital files and will create a simple animation based on an online situation we might encounter. This half term, we will also take part in Safer Internet Day.

DT

This half term we will be developing our knowledge of textiles. We will be designing and creating and decorating our own hand puppets. We will be learning the techniques needed for joining fabrics (pinning, stapling and gluing).

What We Are Learning: Spring 1

 

Maths

Our first unit of work this half term will focus on ‘Length and Height’, where we will compare lengths and describe whether something is taller, shorter or longer. We will learn how to measure two objects for comparison using items and body parts, before moving on to measuring using a ruler. We will then be  counting and writing numbers to 40 before comparing numbers and looking at number patterns. We will then be learning all about ‘Multiplication and Division’ and . learning the foundations of equal groupings, repeated addition, arrays and doubling. To conclude our Math’s learning this half term we will be exploring ‘Fractions’. This will involve making halves and quarters before moving on to making the connection between fractions and division.

RE

Our work this half term will begin with the concluding part of our Christmas unit in which the Wise Men come to visit the baby Jesus, and will look at the tradition of St Nicholas. We will then move on to the unit, ‘Jesus is special’. We will be thinking about friendship; exploring Bible stories that explore Jesus’ power and divine nature as well as talking about how and why Jesus was special.

Science

Our Science unit of work for this half term is ‘Materials’. We will be learning how to tell the difference between an object ant the material that it is made from, including; wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. We will be describing some everyday materials and making groups of materials based on what they look like.

Computing

This half term our unit of work will be, ‘What is a Computer?’ We will learn about the different parts of a computer and iPad. We will learn the difference between hardware and software as well and creating and following algorithms. We will continue to learn about online safety and how to communicate politely online.

Spanish

This half term in Spanish the children will be learning the ‘Days of the Week’. We will learn how to recognise, recall and spell the seven days of the week in Spanish.

 

PSHE

This half term in PSHE we will be learning all about ‘What helps us stay healthy?’

We will understand what being healthy means and who helps us to stay healthy. We will learn how the things that we put into our bodies affect the way that we feel. We will understand how people need to take medicines to help them stay healthy.

What We Are Learning: Autumn 2

Maths

Our first unit of work will focus on ‘Positions’, where we will gain an understanding of positional language as well as directional language for ‘left’ and ‘right’. We will move on to ‘Numbers to 20’, particularly focussing on the numbers between 10 and 20. We will count; write and compare and order these numbers, as well as looking at patterns. We will finish the half term with ‘Addition and Subtraction to 20’ in which we will learn the different ways to add and subtract numbers within 20 and create fact families.

Our unit this half term will focus on adding rhythm and pitch and we will look at how music tells stories about the past.

Computing

Children will use technology to classify mini-beasts. In this activity the children will learn about gathering and presenting information. They will then make their own David Attenborough style nature documentary. They will also start to learn about using digital tools to communicate and give feedback.

What we are learning in Autumn 1 

 

Maths

This half term in Year 1 we will explore numbers to 10. The children will count and use ten frames to represent numbers. We will then be learning how to write numbers using both numerals and words. The children will be introduced to the concept of 0 by counting backwards from numbers below 10. We will be comparing numbers using the terms 'greater than', 'less than' and 'as many as' before exploring which numbers are greatest and smallest. This will help us to be able to order the numbers. By the end of the half term, the children will be able to show '1 more' and '1 less' using practical resources.

Our first unit of work this year will be: ‘Harvest’. We will be aware that we harvest food all around the world and that we some have plenty, while others don’t. We will think about what our response as Christians should be to the need of others.

Our second unit of work will be: My world, Jesus’ world. We will begin to understand that Jesus lived a very long time ago and that the world we live in is very different to Jesus’ world over 2000 years ago.

Our first unit, ‘Me in My Town’ will focus on learning about ourselves, our local area and the history of it. We will be taking part in fieldwork to draw maps and developing out enquiry skills in history when we ask questions to find out what Bishop Martin and Skelmersdale used to be like.

PSHE

Diversity Curriculum Plan: Celebrating Difference - Early Years ShopIn PSHE this half term we will be celebrating our differences. Rabbits will be learning all about what makes us special and we will be sharing our strengths. We will be learning all about how unique we all are but will also be exploring all of the things that we have in common. This half term, the children will learn the correct names for the main body parts and understand how parts of our bodies are private to us.

 

 

 

 

 

Science

The children will be learning how to name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body. We will also be exploring our senses and will be able to say which part of the body is to do with each sense. There will be lots of opportunities for Rabbits class to work scientifically this half term. We will be exploring how we can use observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions. The children will be using a range of equipment and having to look closely when taking accurate readings. We will be learning how to collect and record data to help answer questions we want to know the answers to.
